Lutheran Hospital

Facility Description:
204 Bed Acute Care Facility 500,000 Square Feet
Project Description:
The Brewer-Garrett Company responded to a bid request for replacement of Lutheran Hospital’s steam and chilled water generators in April 2000. In addition to bidding the specification, The Brewer-Garrett Company proposed an alternate solution. This Preferred Customer Solution provided a turnkey design/build boiler and chiller plant that fulfilled the Hospital’s stated goals of…
-
Reliable Steam Service
-
Energy Efficient Steam Plant Operations
-
Efficient Steam Distribution System
-
Reliable Chilled Water Throughout Facility
-
Reduced Cost of Chilled Water
-
Reduced Dependence on Outdated CFC Refrigerants
The Brewer-Garrett Company replaced three chiller plants located throughout the facility with a 1,200 ton centralized chilled water plant (2- 600 ton centrifugal chillers and 1,200 ton cooling tower) which offered full redundancy to critical and semi-critical areas of the Hospital along with additional capacity for future facility growth. The design included energy efficient pumping, an indoor sump to allow for year round cooling and integration with the existing Johnson Controls Metasys system.
The 1950’s era boiler plant consisting of 3 steam boilers was replaced with 3 high efficiency dual fuel boilers manufactured by the Vapor Power Group. All the boilers were Ohio Specials integrated with the existing Johnson Controls System allowing for reallocation of manpower. The steam distribution was upgraded with the replacement/repair of nearly 300 steam traps.
The installation of this project was completed without any interruption to Hospital operations by Brewer-Garrett in-house installation technicians, project managers and engineers. After the first year of operation this program won the Regional ASHRAE Award for Technology. The Brewer-Garrett Company Service Division is providing ongoing service and maintenance on the new chiller and boiler plants.
