HVAC Maintenance Keeps Cottonwood from Clogging Equipment

Even the most advanced commercial HVAC systems require regular checks and tweaks to sustain top energy efficiency. Preventive maintenance reduces electricity bills, extends the life of equipment, and often pays for itself with the reduction of operating, utility, repair, and replacement costs.

During the spring and summer seasons, cottonwood seeds clogging up rooftop units are especially hard on HVAC systems and lower equipment productivity. With a preventive maintenance program, these seeds and other debris are cleaned from the condenser to be sure that the equipment is running as efficiently as possible. Neglecting to remove cottonwood seeds lead to equipment working harder to achieve the same outcome as it would if it were running efficiently. As equipment works harder, more electricity is used and costs increase.

In addition to maintenance, some facilities take advantage of cottonwood filter screens. These screens filter out cottonwood seeds, dust, pollen, insects and anything else that might end up congesting equipment. Screens cannot replace maintenance, but they do keep maintenance time down and keep debris from getting deep inside the equipment.

Brewer-Garrett, an HVAC and commercial energy efficiency company, is experienced in developing and implementing comprehensive commercial HVAC maintenance plans including design/build, installation, and preventive maintenance. Contact us to learn more.

Ohio Schools Lead the Nation in Energy Efficiency and Green School Efforts

Picture of a chalkboard that says K-12.

The U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Schools program, was adopted by the Ohio School Facilities Commission (OSFC), and is a major reason why Ohio is currently the nation’s leading state in energy-efficient LEED schools. This program applies to new construction or major renovations in K-12 schools.

Energy efficiency in Ohio schools has already saved millions of dollars statewide. The deputy executive director of the Ohio School Boards Association, Rob Delane, stated that “those green schools average about a third less energy use in wattage than traditional schools” and that savings “could be upwards of $100,000 per year.”

For schools that are looking to become energy efficient but not to rebuild, the OSFC’s Energy Conservation Program, also known as House Bill 264 (HB 264), allows districts to borrow funds to implement energy efficiency projects and pay them back with the money saved during a 15 year period. These projects are guaranteed by the energy services company (ESCO).

Many schools are opting for HB 264 projects because they have guaranteed savings and they do not have to use taxpayer dollars to implement the project. HB 264 Energy Conservation Programs are paid for over time by the savings in utility costs that occurred as a result of the project.

Energy services and commercial HVAC company, Brewer-Garrett, has over 15 years of implementing successful HB 264 projects, LEED accredited professionals, and are experienced in delivering sustainable design solutions which minimize environmental impact, serving both clients and future generations. Ohio Energy Efficiency Policy Results Show Promise for Proposed Federal Legislation

Senators Shaheen and Portman

In the same month that Senators (D-NH) Shaheen and (R-OH) Portman re-introduced bipartisan legislation promoting the transition to a more energy efficient economy, The Ohio Manufacturer’s Association (OMA) stated that they are convinced that Ohio’s energy efficiency mandates have already saved customers money, and if left intact, will save Ohio customers about $5.7 billion by 2020!

The OMA is the second manufacturing group in Ohio to speak out this month against proposed changes to Ohio’s energy efficiency rules. Cleveland based company, Wire-Net, stated in a letter signed by 16 Northeast Ohio companies, that “Support of energy efficiency plays a key role in energy policy because these projects lower our cost of production and insulate us from changes in rates. Along with renewables, efficiency should remain a part of Ohio’s energy portfolio.” The letter was sent to utilities committee members in response to some who support the proposed changes.

The Shaheen-Portman Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness (ESIC) Act is federal legislation that drives economic growth and encourages private sector job creation by transitioning to a more energy efficient economy. As an Ohio Senator, Rob Portman has witnessed firsthand the benefits that energy efficiency has had in Ohio and therefore proposed the transition to energy efficiency nationwide.

“Senator Shaheen and Portman have put a bill together that will save Americans money, that will make our industry more efficient and more productive, that will create jobs, and that is going to improve our environment.”–Kateri Callahan, President, Alliance to Save Energy

Energy Conservation Partners soon to be Certified Energy Efficient

Certified Energy Efficient Seal

A new certification program has been established to award Brewer-Garrett (BG) partners who have accomplished the highest levels of energy efficiency and cost savings! Energy conservation projects are an important investment for both facilities and communities as these projects are positively reflected in the resulting cost savings and reduced emissions.

The Certified Energy Efficient (CEE) Program Seal will be awarded to partners who have implemented the BG recommended energy and/or water conservation measures to improve efficiency at their facilities and have one year of energy audit data.  This data is used to measure the facility’s energy and cost reductions since project implementation.

Partners will benefit from free promotion of their projects to highlight their efforts to reduce utility costs, improve facility equipment, save energy, and save taxpayer dollars. Promotional materials including (but not limited to) a case study, press release, and blog posts will be produced without cost to the partner.

CEE partners will display the seal on their website and it will link to a description of the CEE program and to a case study describing the partner’s energy conservation project and project results.

The CEE seal will help to enhance the partner’s public image as a steward of the environment, a facility run on sustainable practices, and will serve as an opportunity to educate the partner’s community about new and innovative energy efficiency technologies!

Look for BG’s new Certified Energy Efficient partners soon! Awards will be given on a rolling basis and CEE partner awardees will be listed on the Brewer-Garrett website.

Energy Conservation Project in Kent Makes the News

Logo of the City of Kent

Source: http://www.kentohio.org/

The City of Kent, Ohio was featured in a recent article because of the overwhelming success of a project implemented to reduce their energy consumption.  The project included installing new technology and improved building automation to conserve energy and lower operating costs. Utility savings were the most impressive within the water plant and water reclamation facilities which consume the majority of the city’s total energy demand.

The City of Kent is the largest city in Portage County.  Their Water Reclamation Plant treats 3-5 million gallons of residential, commercial, and industrial wastewater daily.  This plant protects their water by removing solids, reducing organic matter and pollutants, and restoring oxygen.  The clean water then enters the Cuyahoga River with Ohio EPA approval.  This very critical and energy intensive process led the City of Kent to implement an energy conservation project to reduce their plant operations energy consumption. They decided to utilize Ohio House Bill 300 (HB 300) in conjunction with a performance contract with Ohio energy efficiency company, Brewer-Garrett.
