Veterans Administration Hospital Wade Park
Installing boiler and chiller plants in large existing facilities always offer unique challenges. Locations, piping runs, minimal customer disruption and seamless switch over are all critical components to a project's success.
Facing cost overruns and implementation problems, while undergoing a multi-million dollar hospital expansion project, the VA Hospital's ESCO, Sempra Energy Solutions turned to The Brewer-Garrett Company to create a value-engineered solution for the much needed chilled water system. The three phase chiller project at the VA Hospital presented many challenges, however The Brewer-Garrett Company was able to value engineer a solution that was delivered on schedule and saved Sempra Energy Solutions significant installation costs.
Before the three new 1200-ton chillers could be installed an extensive piping project had to be completed. This project encompassed pipe sizes from 1' to 18', with some of the 18' piping running underground for nearly 200 feet, and the remaining 1400 feet of 10', 12' and 18' piping in extremely small crawl spaces underneath the hospital.
The 3600-ton plant was installed in a dedicated chiller house next to the hospital. The chilled water plant was tied into the newly configured piping and designed to utilize variable primary pumping, which allows chilled water to be delivered on demand thus maximizing system efficiency. Once the new chiller plant was brought on-line many of the DX and once through water cooled units were retrofit with chilled water coils substantially reducing electric and water consumption for the Veterans Administration Hospital.
This major system renovation was completed without any interruption of service or major disruption to the patients and staff of the hospital. The Brewer-Garrett Company was able to meet all the unique challenges a project of this size provided and deliver a cost effective, redundant, reliable, expandable and highly efficient chilled water system to the VA Hospital.
