Maxwell Air Force Base

Montgomery, ALEnergy Performance

$37M project cost
4MW CHP System
$111M Savings Over 21 Years

BG partnered with Maxwell Air Force Base–Gunter Annex (MAFB), AFCEC, and DLA on a $37 million energy savings performance contract (ESPC) to improve energy efficiency, resilience, and mission readiness. Using the DOE ESPC procurement vehicle, BG conducted a comprehensive facility assessment and collaborated with MAFB, AFCEC, and DLA to prioritize ECMs addressing critical mission and infrastructure needs.

A key project feature is a 4 MW combined heat and power system, consisting of two 2 MW generators that provide redundancy, reduce reliance on purchased electricity, and allow buildings to operate independently during utility outages. BG also identified 65 buildings totaling 3.27 million square feet for retro-commissioning to modernize outdated controls and improve efficiency, generating approximately $916,800 in annual savings.

The project is expected to save MAFB approximately $111 million over its 21-year performance period while strengthening energy security and supporting the installation’s training mission. Construction is scheduled for completion by March 2028.
