Opportunity

With an increasing emphasis on sustainability, Cleveland Heights-University Heights Schools wanted to educate their students about ways they could decrease energy consumption in their day-to-day lives—especially at school.

Solution

We leveraged our sustainability knowledge to implement the Green Apple Project (GAP).

GAP engages students with active learning, including problem-based approaches with an emphasis on energy conservation and sustainability. By putting energy use in terms that are easily accessible, we bring real world issues into the classroom. Students learn viable ways to change their behavior. Not only does this behavior change decrease energy costs for the school district, but it also has a positive impact on the environment.

Results

Implementation of GAP drove a culture change that emphasizes energy conservation across the school system, resulting in annual savings of more than $200,000—at no cost to the organization.
