Opportunity

The Ohio Theater was destroyed by a fire in 1964. Although remodeled in 1980, it was not restored to its original beauty. In 2015, Playhouse Square invested in a project to restore the theater. Early in the schematic design phase, Brewer-Garrett was selected as the design-assist partner for the Playhouse Square Foundation Ohio Theatre Lobby restoration project.

Solution

The Design-Assist approach immediately showed its value in this undertaking, as our collaboration with the engineer and other team members helped solve challenges presented by this unique restoration. For example, the Ohio Theater Lobby ceilings were arched and restored to their original decorative grandeur. As a result, all ductwork had to be prefabricated in our facility and installed in the field.

The final design consisted of air handling units, steam piping, exhaust systems, and sound attenuation.

Results

By combining our execution knowledge with the engineers’ design expertise, we reduced the budget by 20%, while completing the project ahead of schedule. Our approach included creative rigging, engaging our field personnel to explore field conditions, and prefabricating ductwork. Through in-depth collaboration, we were able to execute this project without impacting any Playhouse Square events.
